What traveling as two changes here
- Traveling alone
- The inns price by room and most rooms here hold two, so a single traveler pays close to the full room rate. This is the trip on our list where traveling alone costs the most
- Two of you
- The loop is built for two: one driver, one navigator, five inns that each keep a handful of rooms
- With children
- From about six, with one caveat. The highland drive is three hours with few places to stop, and that is the part children remember badly
- Six or more together
- Four people in two rooms works at every stop. Beyond that the inns cannot hold you together and the loop stops being one trip
- How the rooms work
- One or two rooms per inn, never more. Two of the five have rooms that share a landing rather than a corridor
- If one of the party drops out
- Inns here take a deposit and hold it, so one traveler leaving does not reduce the room bill. The remaining traveler pays the room
- What the party does together
- All of it. There is no guide and the stops are small enough that you are rarely out of sight of each other
- Who this one is not for
- Anybody expecting warm swimming. The water is cold in August and colder either side
The last two rows lose this office bookings and they stay on the page anyway. A trip that does not suit the people you are bringing is cheaper to find out about here than at the airport.

- Two people sharing a room, unless the party rows above say otherwise for your case.

- The month, the room grade, how far ahead you book, and above all the size and shape of your party.
- When it becomes a number
- At confirmation, in writing, with the operator named. Until then it is the bottom of a real range and nothing more.
No payment is taken on this website. You pay the operator directly and this office never sees a card.
Which weeks are worth paying more for
Late June to mid October. September and the first half of October give the color on the highland drive, and that is the single best fortnight of the year here.
Before June several of the inns are closed and the boat does not run. After late October the loop is possible but half of it is shut.
What gets settled when you confirm
Direction of the loop, clockwise or counter, which changes which inn takes the first night. Whether you want the highland stretch early, when you are fresh, or late, as the finish. Room grade at the two inns that have more than one. And the boat date, which has to sit on a day you are actually on that coast.
